Justice for Colombia kindly accepted our invitation to attend our March branch meeting. A JFC representative presented a DVD on the political situation and the persecution of trade unionists in Colombia.

It was reported that: The General Secretary of ASLEF and others in the JFC delegation met Lilany Obando at the prison gates after her release. She had been imprisoned for her trade union activities and for fighting for human rights.

Lilany is a Colombian trade unionist, human rights defender and academic who had been imprisoned for more than three years and six months without being convicted of any crime, but had been accused of "rebellion".

JFC had campaigned for her freedom throughout the detention. The concern now is that her life is threatened, given the continued false accusations of terrorism against her. In the past, trade unionists and political prisoners have faced aggression, intimidation and assassination shortly after release. JFC would therefore like to ask as many British trade unionists as possible to send off an urgent action to Colombian Ambassador to the UK, calling for Lilany to be protected urgently.

Here is the link to the urgent action - http://www.justiceforcolombia.org/campaigns/lilany-obando/
There is also a link to the main JFC website from our 'Affiliations' page.

The government believes that if we cut back on services, and jobs, a dose of poverty will somehow, mysteriously, lead to a booming economy. Britain's unions believe that we need to commission new public initiatives that will create employment and thereby increase the country's wealth.

If you support the TUC position, it's no good doing it quietly in the mess-room. To stand any chance of getting the coalition to reconsider their disastrous policies, we need to make our position public and overwhelming.

On Saturday, we will march for 'an end to Austerity'. ASLEF members from all over Britain, will assemble (with their banners) from 11:00 on Victoria Embankment, moving off around noon for a rally in Hyde Park.

Let's have a good turn out from the Waterloo Nine Elms Branch.
